Amberd is one of the famous and valuable architectural buildings of Armenia. The castle of Amberd is situated near the village of Byurakan in the Aragatsotn region. This amazing castle was built on a promontory formed sides surrounded by impregnable canyons leaving only the north side accessible.
Based on history the great architect Toros Toramanian supposed that in pre-Christian times this place was chosen as a fortress because of the natural strength of the site. And this is provided by some partially preserved pre-Christian battlements in the south-west. The complex of Amberd Fortress Castle includes the defensive walls, the castle, bath and the church.
In a ruined state the Fortress of Amberd meaning a "fortress in the clouds" used to be one of the primary military-defensive points of the Armenian Kingdom. Amberd is a unique beauty which is suitable to visit from May to November. But in May-June period, the flowers around the castle fortress make it more beautiful and attractive.
