Kecharis Monastery

The amazing complex of Kecharis was built the 11^th-13^th centuries. The Monastery of Kecharis is situated in the north-western part of Tsakhkadzor. The Monastery comprises four churches– Saint Grigor Lusavorich, Saint Nshan, Saint Astvatsatsin and Saint Harutyun. The complex of Kecharis also includes various beautiful khachkars (cross-stones) dating to the 12^th-13^th centuries. The 12^th century the monastery was affected by Seljuk domination. And in one of the manuscripts it is mentioned that “initially prosperous Kecharis became dull and lifeless”.

But in 1161-1165 commander-in-chief Zakaria released the monastery from the Seljuks. The monastery became much more beautiful and life was again breathed into it. The entire monastery is made of basalt. The gavit (narthex) of Kecharis Monastery was built in 1196-1206.

The Monastery of Kecharis was a major learning center in medieval Armenia. That was connected to the greatest of Armenian’s families such as – Pahlavunis, Orbelis, Zakarians and Proshians.

In the 18^th century the Kecharis Monastery was deserted and abandoned. In 1947-1949 it was repaired and fenced.

The wonderful monastery of Kecharis is very popular not only in Armenia, but also in entire world. It is located near one of the most visited resorts in Armenia and it is must see building for the visitors.
