The monastery of Sevanavank is located on the Sevan Island, in the Gegharkunik province of Armenia. The location on the high hill duplicates the charm of the monastery. During the bronze century the island was strengthened with fort walls. And in 874 was found the magnificent Monastery of Sevan. During the 9th century Sevan became the royal citadel of the Syunik kings. And the daughter of the King Ashot Bagratuni – Mariam, built two amazing churches - the Church of Siant Arakelots (means “Holy Apostoles” in Armenian) and the Saint Karapet. Over the course of history the churches were damaged, and during 1956-1957 the churches were once again reconstructed.
Sevanavank had an important religious and cultural center in medieval times. In 1990, All Armenian Catholicos Vazgen 1st founded a seminary at Sevanavank, which is now named after his name. The churches of Surb Arakelots and Saint Karapet are cruciform plan structure with octagonal tambours. At the first sight the both are very alike in look. At the same time they are simple and beautiful.
The beautiful monastery of Sevanavank is one of the most visited Armenian monasteries. As also it is one of the few that is still an active monastery, which will never lose its charm and mystery.
